Portfolio - 2004 - Headshots

Sarah Nicholson researched the carved Heads found in the Priory adding a layer of interpretation to the English Heritage survey of medieval masonry. The heads have spent centuries gazing down on visitors to the Priory and I have focused on the staring eyes. Modeled on local characters they represent negative human attributes: anger, vanity and so on; their gaze is meant to inspire guilt, not joy. Yet in themselves I find them to be joyful artworks, beautiful but somehow sinister.
